Getting Started with Sphere XG - View, Navigate and Evaluate Project Data

Written by Stefanie Zerulla

With Sphere XG, you can explore all project information in one place. Instead of searching through scans, photos, documents, and emails across different tools, you can view and navigate complete site data in a single cloud platform.

Scans, 360° photos, 3D models, and layout plans are connected in one project, so you can evaluate conditions from different perspectives and quickly find the details you need. This helps you answer site-related questions, verify progress, and identify issues with confidence.

This getting started guide will help you open and navigate your first project, review project content, and use available data to understand site conditions.

If you want more information on a topic described in this getting started guide, you can use the search bar at the top of this article.

Before you start

Before you begin, confirm the following:

  • You have accepted your workspace invitation.

  • You can sign in to Sphere XG.

  • You have permission to view projects.

If you need help setting up your account, see Create Sphere XG Account and Log in.

Identify and Open a Project

When you open Sphere XG, the Projects page is opened.

By default, projects are displayed in a tile view and are sorted according to the criterion Last updated in a descending order.

You can select a different sorting criterion, i.e. Project Name, Created Last Captured and Size. Furthermore, you can sort in an ascending and descending way. For a better overview of the available projects, you can change to the list view by clicking the icon.

If you know part of the project name, you can also type it in the Search field.

Once you have identified your project:

1. Click the entry in the tile or list view.
The Project Overview tab opens.

2.Click the Open in Sphere XG button to open the project.

The project opens in the 2D view.

In this view, you can find and open 360° and 2D photos.

Views in Sphere XG

There are different ways to navigate a project in Sphere XG:

If you are interested in the floor plan or layout of a site, the 360° photos taken at the site for different location or also at different times, click the icon at the bottom left of the Viewer to open the 2D view, see figure above.
This view is the default view when you open a project in Sphere XG.

If you want to look mainly at scans and point clouds, click the icon at the bottom left of the Viewer to open the 3D view, see figure below.

If you want to "walk" through your project with the 360° photos, click the

icon at the bottom right of the Viewer to open the walk mode view, see figure below.

If you want to see how your project develops over time, open the dropdown at the top left of the viewer and start your time travel.

The walk mode view and the time travel option are described in some more detail in section Walk and Time Travel through your Project below.

Walk and Time Travel through Your Project

360° captures help you navigate and walk your project, either through the virtual site or through time if there are several captures for a single point of time.

Walk the Virtual Site

Open the walkmode view, either by clicking the icon in the toolbar at the bottom left of the Viewer or by clicking a waypoint in the 2D view.

In the walkmode view, you can see the waypoint icons as white rings in the 360° photos.

1. Click a waypoint to go to this location.

Clicking a location without a waypoint in the 360° image will open the closest waypoint.

The currently active waypoint is highlighted in the mini view at the bottom right of the viewer.

2. Click the left mouse key to "walk" through your site.

You can turn left, right, up and down by pressing and holding the left mouse button and dragging the mouse.

Time Travel through Your Project

The time travel dropdown at the top of the walkmode view contains all 360° photos and 2D photos of one waypoint taken at different times. This dropdown also contains other data sets showing the scene in a 1.5m radius around the currently active waypoint.

1. Click the icon to go to the walk mode view or click a waypoint in the 2D view.

2. Open the time travel dropdown at the top left.

3. For a better visualization, click the icon. The photos will be displayed in a thumbnail view.

4. Select the photo you want.

Clicking the three-dots menu of the selected 360° photo provides options to edit, move, download and delete the 360° photo.

If you have uploaded photos at different points in time, you can create a so-called time travel that shows your project at various stages.

Photos from the same date are grouped in a single entry in the time travel dropdown.

The number next to the photo capture date shows the number of photos taken on this date. If you click this number, the photos are all displayed in a carousel.

You can either click these photos or go through them with the arrow keys.

Add Annotations and Make Measurements

Errors occur. Therefore, Sphere XG allows adding annotations and making measurements. If you find that you lack permissions, ask your workspace administrator for support.

Adding annotations and making measurements is described in this getting started guide: Getting Started With Sphere XG - Create and Edit Projects
