This chapter provides an overview of terms and concepts used in Sphere XG and how they are related.
Workspace
A workspace in Sphere XG organizes all projects, groups, and user permissions in a single environment. Workspaces can be structured in different ways, for example, by department, project category, or client. Users and teams who are invited to a workspace become members. They can be assigned roles at the workspace, group, or project level based on their required access requirements.
Project
A project contains scans, point clouds, 360° photos, floor plans, CAD models, VideoMode captures, etc. It also contains features provided by Sphere XG, for example layers, areas, measurements, annotations and tags.
The project management in Sphere XG is organized in groups. When a project is created, you must assign the project to a group and select a Project Manager who must be a member of this group.
You can create projects directly in Sphere XG and then upload data. Or you can synchronize Sphere XG with FARO SCENE or FARO Connect to upload an already existing project.
Group
Groups in Sphere XG help you organize and manage related projects. Each group has one or more users with a Group Manager role. These users can create and edit the group and assign the Project Manager role for the projects of the group.
Team
A team in Sphere XG is a collection of users grouped together for easier permission management. All users in a team are treated equally within the team structure. When you assign permissions to a team, all team members receive the same permissions. Teams can be members of workspaces, groups, or projects, and can be assigned appropriate roles at each level. This simplifies access management when multiple users need identical permissions.
Members
In Sphere XG, the term members refers to users or teams that have been assigned to workspaces, projects, or groups.
Users and teams can be members of workspaces. In this case, they are assigned a workspace role.
Users and teams can be members of projects. In this case, they are assigned a project role.
Users and teams can be members of groups. In this case, they are assigned the Group Manager or Project Manager role.
Users can be members of teams.
Areas and Layers
An area is the physical representation of a location in your project, for example the first floor of a building, hangar A, etc. A project may have more than one area. Areas contain, scans, layers, 360° photos, etc. They are shown with icon
in the project structure view. In HoloBuilder and the JobWalk App, areas are called sheets.
A layer is a concept in Sphere XG describing the fact that you can overlay and align documents (.pdf, .png, .jpeg and .jpg format), i.e. 2D plans, layouts and schematics. For example one layer may show the floor plan with windows, doors and walls and another layer may show piping and electricity. You can overlay these layers or hide one or the other. For more information, see Hide or Display Multiple Layers.
An overview map is a top view generated from a scan dataset uploaded to Sphere XG. This is automatically created when uploading scan data to Sphere XG.
A floor plan is a top-view plan of a building's layout including walls, windows, doors and other structural elements. Used by architects, engineers, etc. to visualize the spatial layout of the building. In Sphere XG, you can generate a floor plan based on a point cloud in your project, see Generate a Floor Plan from a Point Cloud (beta).
